Love Your Magic is dedicated to the healthy development of brown and black girls and women, providing inspiration and opportunities for self-love, self-advocacy and sister-hood.
Founded in 2017 by five female Boston educators who came together to discuss their concern over the criminalization of brown and black girls that they were witnessing.
Since its founding, LYM has conducted a free annual event for black and brown girls in grades 1-8. Local professional women of color deliver inspiring presentations giving girls the opportunity to learn more about navigating the world. Attendance grows annually, now nearing 500 participants.
Additional programs include after-school, weekend, and summer programs. In 2022 LYM introduced “How Are Our Girls” a three-part series for parents, teachers, and caregivers of brown and black girls, delivered by experts on the development of girls of color.
The Women’s Fund three-year grant to LYM will help to support Be Well Retreats, launched in 2021 to address stress, anxiety, and other emotional and mental health con-cerns. At the retreats, girls 12-17 learn to practice and enjoy indoor and outdoor activities that nurture their mental, emotional, and physical health. Activities include music, yoga, dancing, journaling, and breathing exercises. Girls take a wellness box home that in-cludes an emotions card used to identify and name feelings.
